"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe him to be worthy of such devotion."
Only one out of a thousand baby sea turtles survives after hatching. In nature, once they emerge, hatchlings make bite-sized meals for birds, crabs and a host of predators in the ocean. These natural threats, however, are not the reasons sea turtle populations have plummeted toward extinction. To understand what really threatens sea turtle survival, we must look at the actions of humans. In many cultures around the world, people still harvest sea turtle eggs for consumption. Most countries forbid the taking of eggs, but enforcement is lax, poaching is rampant, and the eggs can often be found for sale in local markets. In these same areas, adult sea turtles are harvested for their meat. Turtle products, such as jewelry made from hawksbill shells, also create a direct threat to sea turtles.
Merle's Door- Lessons from a Freethinking Dog by Ted Kerasote (Call number: 636.70929 KER) Funny, amazing and tender, this book is a moving true love story that reveals how the partnership between dogs and humans can become far more than we have imagined! Merle and Ted found each other in the Utah desert. Merle was about ten months old, surviving on his own, and hoping to find someone to hang his heart on. Ted who likes to write about animals had been searching for a pup whom he could shape into a companion. The training went both ways. Ted showed Merle how to live around wildlife, and Merle reshaped Ted's ideas about the complexity of a dog's mind by showing him how a dog's intelligence could be expanded by allowing it to make of its own decisions. Acting as Merle's translator, and using Merle's life and lessons as a door into the world of dogs, Ted explores why the dog-human bond is so intense and how the people and dogs can communicate readily with each other. This exquisitely written book raises many important questions that every thoughtful dog owner should consider.
